Sooth Burning from Carpal Tunnel
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most commonly recognized of all the repetitive strain injuries (RSI). RSI is a general term for disorders that occur from prolonged, repetitious use of the hands which results in pain, burning, swelling, tingling, numbness, loss of dexterity and weakness. Other synonyms for RSI include: Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD), Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS) and Repetitive Motion Syndrome (RMS). The more specific disorders are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), Tendonitis, Tenosynovitis and a host of others. Of course CTS is the most common malady brought on by repetitive hand motion. In this condition, a branch of the median nerve in the forearm is compressed at the wrist as it passes through the tunnel formed by the wrist bones, or carpals, and a ligament that lies just under the skin. The syndrome occurs most often in middle age and affects more women than men. It is usually due to arthritis or other disorders that affect bones and ligaments. Sometimes fluid accumulation (edema) or sudden weight gain such as occurs in pregnancy may also put pressure on the nerve in the carpal tunnel. The symptoms are initially intermittent but then become constant. Numbness and tingling begin in the thumb and first two fingers; then the hand, and sometimes the whole arm, becomes painful. The pain may be quite severe and can awaken us from sleep. If symptoms are relatively mild Far Infrared (FIR) gloves can help relieve some of the symptoms of a repetitive stress injury in the hand or wrist.
